WhatsApp has a “read later” function

WhatsApp users should soon be able to specify that they are not informed about new messages in selected chats.

WhatsApp should have a function that can also be used to mute chats . Conversations can be moved to a “Read Later” category. The corresponding button will then be visible at the top of the Chats tab: If you click on it, you can view the muted chats.

The read later Function is documented at WABetaInfo and is intended to replace and expand the archiving of chats. If a chat is currently in the archive, the user will be informed about new incoming messages and the chat will be automatically moved from the archive back to the main chat area.

Archive function with WhatsApp

Um So far, it was only possible to mute certain chats not to be disturbed: This means that the acoustic notifications can be switched off for individual chats for 8 hours, 1 week or forever. The chat is then still visible in the regular list of chats and the number of new messages is displayed.

The new “Read later” function is in the beta version 2.21.2.2. in front. It is unclear when the function will be available in the major version. It should temporarily be possible to switch off this new function: Then the chat is moved from the read-later collection to the list of main chats when a new message arrives.

Criticism of WhatsApp

Whatsapp was recently criticized because the service forced approval of its new privacy policy, which says that data will be passed on to other Facebook services. The possibility of passing on applies with the restriction that these may not be used for advertising, but for analysis purposes. The messages themselves are still end-to-end encrypted; this is about the metadata.
