EVGA found out that its GeForce RTX 3090 burned out in the New World game due to soldering defects in the power circuit
It took EVGA six weeks to determine the true source of the problem causing the GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards to fail when launching the New World multiplayer game. Based on the results of a study of two dozen graphics cards returned to the manufacturer, the company determined that the cause of the breakdown was a manufacturing defect.
In early reports, some players complained that Amazon Games’ New World game showed a very high frame rate in the main menu, which led to software glitches, and in some cases, to the failure of video cards. On the forums where the problem was discussed, the most often mentioned video cards were GeForce RTX 3090 from EVGA.
The company collected from users all the suddenly deceased video cards, after which they carried out an X-ray analysis, which showed that the cause of the breakdown was poor-quality soldering of the microcircuits. The company also found that the problem was encountered only with video cards released in 2020. This is in a conversation with representatives of EVGA found out the portal PC World .
“All cards with the indicated problems were produced in 2020. Analysis of the accelerators using X-ray equipment showed poor soldering of the microcircuits next to the MOSFET circuits that power the graphics accelerator. The company declined to disclose the exact number of GeForce RTX 3090s sold with this flaw, but indicated that they were significantly less than one percent “, – reports PC World .
Previously, the manufacturer released a firmware update for its graphics cards that fixes an issue with the cooling fan controller, which was incorrectly detecting their speed. Initially, it was this component that was suspected as the main culprit for the failure of graphics accelerators. However, EVGA denied this. The company pointed out that the incorrect graphics card fan speed indicators displayed in the HWiNFO and GPU-Z programs were caused by errors in the controller itself, but this fact did not affect the performance of the cards. However, the company has updated its Precision proprietary software to display fan rpm information correctly by filtering out the telemetry data from the controller.
As for Amazon Games, the studio previously released an update to New World limiting the frame rate in Game. EVGA, for its part, has pledged to replace all failed graphics cards.
